Energy in an ecosystem flows strictly in a unidirectional (one-way) path, moving across specific structural steps known as trophic levels. The standard order of a classic food chain is:
Producers (Autotrophs) → Primary Consumers (Herbivores) → Secondary Consumers (Carnivores) → Tertiary Consumers (Top Predators) → Decomposers (Detritivores)
1. Producers (Trophic Level 1)
The foundation of every food chain. These are autotrophs, primarily green plants, algae, and cyanobacteria, which synthesize their own food using sunlight through photosynthesis.
2. Primary Consumers (Trophic Level 2)
These are herbivores that feed directly on producers to obtain their energy. Examples include grasshoppers, rabbits, cows, and zooplankton.
3. Secondary Consumers (Trophic Level 3)
These are primary carnivores or omnivores that consume primary consumers. Examples include frogs, snakes, small birds, and small fish.
4. Tertiary Consumers (Trophic Level 4)
