1. What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity (short for biological diversity) refers to the variety of all living organisms on Earth and the complex ecological systems they form. It encompasses every form of life—from microscopic bacteria and fungi to plants, insects, animals, and human beings.

Biodiversity is typically understood across three main levels:

Genetic Diversity

The variation of genes within a single species (e.g., thousands of distinct rice varieties or dog breeds).

Species Diversity

The variety of different species within a given region or ecosystem (e.g., lions, oak trees, honeybees, and corals).

Ecosystem Diversity

The variety of habitats, biological communities, and ecological processes across oceans, forests, and wetlands.

2. Why is Biodiversity Important for Human Lives?

Biodiversity is essential for human survival, health, and daily well-being. It provides foundational benefits—often called ecosystem services—that sustain life on Earth.

A. Essential Resources (Provisioning Services)

  • Food and Nutrition: Virtually all human food comes from biological resources. Genetic diversity within crops protects our food supply against diseases, pests, and changing climate conditions.
  • Medicine and Health: Over 50% of modern prescription medicines and many traditional remedies originate from natural sources (e.g., antibiotics from fungi, aspirin from willow bark).
  • Raw Materials: Wood for shelter, natural fibers for clothing (cotton, wool), rubber, fuel, and paper are all products of biological systems.

B. Ecological Balance (Regulating Services)

  • Climate Regulation: Ecosystems like forests, peatlands, and oceans act as carbon sinks, absorbing greenhouse gases and helping regulate global climate patterns.
  • Pollination: More than 75% of global food crop types rely on animal pollinators—such as bees, butterflies, birds, and bats—to reproduce and yield fruits, nuts, and seeds.
  • Water Purification & Flood Control: Wetlands and forests naturally filter pollutants from water and act as sponges to cushion against floods and droughts.
