What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms present on Earth. It includes diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems.

Levels of Biodiversity

  • Genetic Diversity – Variation of genes within a species
  • Species Diversity – Variety of different species in a region
  • Ecosystem Diversity – Variety of ecosystems (forests, deserts, oceans, etc.)

Importance of Biodiversity

  • Provides food, medicine, and raw materials
  • Maintains ecological balance
  • Supports economic activities
  • Helps in climate regulation

Threats to Biodiversity

  • Habitat loss and deforestation
  • Pollution

  • Overexploitation of resources
