Plant Kingdom Class 11 NCERT: Classification, Examples & NEET MCQs

๐ŸŒฟ Plant Kingdom — Class 11 NCERT Biology

Master the major plant groups with simple classification, important characteristics, examples, life-cycle concepts and NEET-focused MCQs.

The Plant Kingdom includes organisms with diverse body structures, reproductive strategies and life cycles. For Class 11 Biology and NEET preparation, the key is to understand the basis of classification rather than memorising names randomly.

The major groups discussed in NCERT include Algae, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms.

1. Basis of Classification in Plant Kingdom

Plants can be compared using several important characteristics. These include the level of body organisation, presence or absence of vascular tissues, seed formation and whether seeds are enclosed within fruits.

Character Why It Matters
Body organisation Helps distinguish simple plant bodies from differentiated plant bodies.
Vascular tissue Xylem and phloem enable transport in vascular plants.
Seed formation Separates seed-bearing plants from seedless groups.
Fruit formation Angiosperms have seeds enclosed within fruits.
๐Ÿง  NEET Memory Order:

Algae → Bryophytes → Pteridophytes → Gymnosperms → Angiosperms

2. Algae and Bryophytes

Algae

Algae are primarily aquatic, photosynthetic organisms with relatively simple plant bodies. Their body is generally a thallus.

Important Algal Groups

Group Examples
Chlorophyceae Chlamydomonas, Volvox, Ulothrix, Spirogyra
Phaeophyceae Ectocarpus, Laminaria, Sargassum
Rhodophyceae Polysiphonia, Porphyra, Gelidium

Bryophytes

Bryophytes are often called the amphibians of the plant kingdom because they generally require water for sexual reproduction.

They do not possess well-developed vascular tissues like those found in higher vascular plants.

Examples include Marchantia, Funaria and Sphagnum.

๐ŸŒฑ Quick Recall:

Bryophytes → Amphibians of plant kingdom

3. Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms

Pteridophytes

Pteridophytes are vascular plants that reproduce through spores and do not produce seeds.

Examples include Selaginella, Equisetum and ferns.

The dominant phase of the life cycle is the sporophyte.

Gymnosperms

Gymnosperms are seed-producing plants in which the ovules are not enclosed within an ovary. Consequently, their seeds are commonly described as naked seeds.

Examples include Cycas, Pinus and Gnetum.

Angiosperms

Angiosperms are flowering plants. Their ovules are enclosed within the ovary, and after fertilisation the ovary develops into a fruit containing seeds.

Angiosperms are broadly divided into monocotyledons and dicotyledons.

Group Key Feature Example
Pteridophytes Vascular, seedless Fern
Gymnosperms Naked seeds Pinus
Angiosperms Flowers and enclosed seeds Mango

4. Plant Kingdom Life Cycles & NEET MCQs

Alternation of Generations

Plant life cycles involve alternating phases known as gametophytic and sporophytic generations. The relative importance of these phases varies among plant groups.

The gametophyte produces gametes, whereas the sporophyte produces spores through meiosis.

Haplontic, Diplontic and Haplo-Diplontic Life Cycles

  • Haplontic: haploid phase is dominant.
  • Diplontic: diploid phase is dominant.
  • Haplo-diplontic: both multicellular haploid and diploid phases occur.
๐ŸŽฏ NEET Concept:

Do not confuse gametophyte with gamete. The gametophyte is a multicellular phase that produces gametes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the major groups in the Plant Kingdom?

The major groups discussed in Class 11 NCERT include algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Why are bryophytes called amphibians of the plant kingdom?

Bryophytes generally live on land but require water for sexual reproduction, which is why they are commonly called amphibians of the plant kingdom.

What are gymnosperms?

Gymnosperms are seed-producing plants in which the ovules are not enclosed within an ovary, resulting in commonly described naked seeds.

What are angiosperms?

Angiosperms are flowering plants whose ovules are enclosed within an ovary and whose seeds are enclosed within fruits.

๐ŸŒฑ Plant Kingdom – Bryophytes (Mosses & Liverworts) | NEET 2025 Notes

Introduction Bryophytes are often called the “Amphibians of the Plant Kingdom” because they require water for reproduction but can survive on land as well. They form a crucial link between algae and pteridophytes. For NEET aspirants, bryophytes are an important NCERT-based topic that often appear in exams with direct questions. --- General Characteristics of Bryophytes Non-vascular plants (no xylem or phloem) Plant body is thalloid (undifferentiated into true root, stem, and leaves) Anchored by rhizoids instead of roots Reproduction occurs through spores Life cycle shows alternation of generations (gametophyte dominant, sporophyte dependent) --- Classification of Bryophytes Bryophytes are divided into three main groups: 1. Liverworts Example: Marchantia Plant body is dorsiventral, thalloid Asexual reproduction: by fragmentation and gemmae Sexual reproduction: male and female sex organs borne on separate structures 2. Mosses Example: Funaria, Polytrichum Gametophyte has two ...

The Living World Class 11 Notes: Ultimate NEET & CBSE Guide

To classify something as living, we evaluate specific biological processes . However, NCERT strictly distinguishes between a characteristic feature (common to living things but can have exceptions or apply superficially to non-living things) and a defining feature (present in all living organisms without any exception). The Five Core Features of Life Growth: An increase in mass and twin characteristics of growth: increase in mass and increase in number of individuals. Non-Living Exception: Mountains, boulders, and sand dunes grow by accumulation of material on their surface (extrinsic growth). Living organisms grow from the inside (intrinsic growth). Hence, growth is NOT a defining feature. Reproduction: The production of progeny possessing features more or less similar to those of parents. Exceptions: Mules, sterile worker bees, and infertile human couples do not reproduce. Yet, they are alive. Hence, reproduction is NOT a defining feat...
